Making a Difference

"Kids are 20 percent on the population, but 100% of the future, let’s give them a healthier one." All of us have some sort of childhood cooking memory. Maybe it was helping your Mum make dinner in the back kitchen, pitching in on family dinners or the first time dad let you near his grill to turn a burger. Go on, let the wheels turn and reminisce just for a moment, you'll find some of your memories.

The world has changed an awful lot in the last 20 years. Between football games (soccer), convenience foods, drive-through fast food and games consoles, the idea of "preparing a home made dinner" daily has almost become an archaic notion. Ovens are turned on more to heat up frozen pot roast, Lasagna and other dismal meals than to make wonderful chocolate-chip cookies that kids love. What happened to family dinners? Where it wasn't just about the food but quality time at the dinner table with loved ones?

I ponder if we are in the process of losing homemade food. For me as a child it was of the greatest way for granny, mum and I to connect, to communicate and spend time together with no distractions other than mixing bowls and saucepans. Those are probably my most vivid and heart warming memories of my childhood – smells, tastes and sounds of a working kitchen. There was always a bonus in the end when we got to taste our creations. We cooked, laughed, joked, cleaned, ate and laughed some more.

For me, teaching children about cooking feels so good. I am really lucky with my job to many celebrities on the road. Being in the industry I'm in, I have met a lot of my idols and it felt good, but nothing has ever touched so deeply me as this, knowing that I can hopefully have an impact on wee ones.

As a child growing up in Liverpool, I spent 5 years (8-13) in the kitchen with Granny Ashton. These years were amazing for me and it paved the way to not only good manners, love and the gift of giving. It paved the way of my culinary passage.

I have found that getting the wee ones involved in the cooking process encourages them to try the various foods.

I also want to say thank you to my adopted Families, Cabot Creamery, American Dairy Association, Crisco for all giving me the opportunity to follow my passion and work with kids. Together with these great companies we are making a difference in their future.
